Applications open for R133K fellowship for women scientists

Applications for the L’Oreal UNESCO Women in Science Sub-Saharan Africa Fellowship have now opened.

The fellowship, which is currently in its 16th year, recognises  women scientists whose outstanding achievements have contributed to the advancement of scientific research and knowledge and its benefits to society. It also provides support to promising young women who are already making significant contributions in their scientific disciplines.

Last year, we introduced you to eight African women scientists who had been chosen to receive grants from the fellowship. They are testament to the amazing scientific work being done by women across the continent to change the lives of people in their communities and the rest of the world.

€5 000 (about R66 000) and €10 000 (R133 000) grants are given to ten fellows each year at an awards ceremony held in one of the participating countries.

To be eligible for the fellowship, you must fit the following criteria:

  • Have obtained a Ph.D in life or physical sciences or pursuing studies leading to a Ph.D degree
  • Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country
  • Be working in a research lab or institution in one of the region’s countries or being enrolled in a doctoral programme at a university in the region
  • Be no more than 40 years old by the end of the application period for Ph.D and not more than 45 years for post-doctoral

Grants will be awarded according to outstanding academic records, scientific quality of the research project and its innovative nature and productivity.

Applications for the L’Oreal UNESCO Women in Science Sub-Saharan Fellowship close on July 4th and must be submitted on the fellowship website.
