Adobe buys new 3D gaming software firm Mixamo

Adobe has spent an unspecified amount of money acquiring a 3D modelling company out of San Francisco called “Mixamo”.

Mixamo produces 3D animation software that focuses on character modelling for videogames.

Winston Hendrickson, vice president of products and digital imaging at Adobe announced the acquisition in a blog post on Adobe’s official website.

The post says that Mixamo’s software will be integrated into Photoshop Creative Cloud (CC), giving users access to a library of 3D assets as well as the ability to create new ones and use these in either pictures or animation.

Mixamo also brings with it more options for environments, such as realistic lighting, shadows and reflections.

Hendrickson also mentions 3D scanning  and how it will increase demand for this type of content. Since 3D scanning is currently in its infancy, it’ll be interesting to see if Adobe, with its new changes, will support any new hardware which is produced in this field.

You can also see a short video, showing off some animated characters created in Mixamo, imported and then rendered in Photoshop with a 2D background.

“This is just the beginning,” Hendrickson said. “From content through capabilities, integrating Mixamo into Creative Cloud provides an incredible platform for more 3D innovation in the future.”

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can download a free version of Mixamo’s software.
