New iMac and Macbook available to buy in SA

The local iStore is now showing listings for three updated Apple products – two variants of the 15inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display and the 27inch Imac with a 5K Retina Display – two of which are available to buy in South Africa, one of which needs to be pre-ordered. As is the case with all Apple products, they cost a pretty penny, so Apple fanboys (and girls) had best start saving now. Here’s what oodles of cash can buy you:

iMac 27-Inch

With marketers throwing around the terms 4K, UHD and SUHD, now is the right time to skip all those nebulous terms and look at raw resolution figures, which is what these apple updates are about.

The new IMac has a 5 120×2 880 resolution over its 27inches. Which, if you want to do the maths, is a little more than 7 times the pixel count of the current “High Definition” standard of 1 920X1 080.

This isn’t as good as it sounds, though. You cannot use the iMac as a standalone display and Windows has a difficult time scaling to that resolution, though that might change with Windows 10 around the corner.

One more thing to be weary of is the graphics cards running this demanding display; a last-generation AMD Radeon R9 M295X (which is also an optional extra). The card is going to have a tough time displaying anything but static pictures at those resolutions, and you can forget doing any kind of gaming on it. This is a disappointment, as AMD’s new cards are right around the corner.

MacBook Pro

Right now, only the lower clocked 2.2GHz version of the MacBook is available to buy, with the 2.5GHz version being listed as a pre-order.

Although not at the same level as the iMac, the 2 880X1 800 is still very respectable, but it’s put to shame by similar offerings, such as the 3 200×1 800 display of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro.

The battery life is also being stated as having up to 9 hours of wireless web use, which is perfect for those long writing sessions in your favourite coffee shop.
