GeekFest, the huge celebration of Gauteng geek culture that has been happening every year since 2011, is exactly a month away. And the organisers send word that there’s a few attractions in store this year over and above last.

In addition to the usual cosplay, robot wars, LARPing, medieval battle demonstrations, Zombie Run is back again along with board game compos and trader stalls. And there’s also a Mortal Kombat X competition through which people can win prizes for tearing each others’ spines out (and worse) in the gore-drenched brawler.

The prizes on offer are pretty cool, too, thanks to sponsors Ster Kinekor and Cooler Master. Here’s what the top three players can win:

1st Prize

2nd Prize

3rd Prize

  • Surprise Legacy-Gen Goodie Bag containing various Xbox 360 and PS3 games.
  • Cooler Master Sirus C Gaming Headset (For Consoles and PCs)

Cooler Master will also hold a lucky draw during the tournament where people can walk away with cool branded goodies. Perhaps consider wearing the Leprechaun Pants of Luck +5 you keep aside for special occasions on the day.

The organisers are also running a promotion on the GeekFest Facebook page ahead of the event where you can stand a chance to win a copy of MKX on Xbox One or a pair of tickets for GeekFest.

GeekFest is happening from the 4th to the 7th of July at Huddle Park Golf and Recreation, Club Street, Linksfield, Johannesburg. Doors open at 10:00am until late.

We’ll be there.

Deon got his first taste of PC gaming at the tender age of 11 when his father bought an 8088 XT, ostensibly to "help him with his homework". Instead, it introduced him to Leisure Suit Larry, King Graham, Sonny Bonds and many more, and Deon has been a PC gamer and hardware enthusiast ever since. He landed his first professional writing gig in 2006 at a prestigious local PC magazine, a very happy happenstance as he got to write for a living about things he loves - tech, PCs, gaming, and everything in between. He's been writing about it all ever since, and loves every minute of it.
