Five new solar projects will add 371MW to the grid

Solar power is really taking off in South Africa, and if you need any further proof, just have a look at the plethora of companies that will be operating in the country in the future.

SunEdison is no stranger to the region either, but it certainly is making the biggest of impacts. In addition to the 86 megawatt (MW) solar power plant earmarked for Kimberley, it announced today that it will build another five plants in SA – totaling 371MW.

The additional five solar plants will be located in the Northern Cape and North West Provinces, and once they are all fully operational, they will be able to provide electricity to more than 200 000 homes. The electricity feed will be supplied to Eskom under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

“Over the past three years, SunEdison has had a successful track record delivering highly reliable, affordable solar power to South Africa. We selected project sites that strengthen the Eskom grid and distribute project benefits across a range of communities,” said Pashupathy Gopalan, SunEdison president for Asia Pacific.

He added that the new projects will offer local enterprise development, skills development and procurement programmes.

Adding up everything SunEdison produces in South Africa, the company will put out 457 MW across six solar power projects in South Africa.
