Coding camp for SA students turns to crowdfunding for winter event

NxtGen Pioneers will be hosting a coding camp for 25 high school learners this winter, and the IT in education initiative needs help in raising funds for the program.

Students from two schools in Elsies River and the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology will take part in the NxtGen Winter Camp from June 29th to July 10th at the Interactive Community Access Network (ICAN) Centre in Elsies River, where they’ll be introduced to programming on WordPress and HTML.

Trainers and mentors will be on hand to help each learner to develop a WordPress/ HTML template for their or any school of their choice. Thereafter, the first 100 schools to download and upload the complete template will get free web hosting for a year.

NxtGen Pioneers is looking to raise at least R25 000 on Thundafund to cover some of the camp’s running costs such as transport and catering, the ultimate goal however is to raise R150 000 to cover costs for all upcoming camps in 2015.

“From our previous Summer Camp we know 78% of our scholars will pursue tech careers when the complete high school. The above is the reason why NxtGen exists. It’s not just about introducing scholars to the tech world but we exist to teach them that they can create worth wile solution using tech while they are in school,” the campaign page reads.

“We run the programme to make sure that our students do not miss out on opportunities that are open to them.”

The NxtGen Winter Camp crowdfunding campaign closes on July 9th.
