CWU preparing for massive ICT strike

South Africa’s Communication Workers Union (CWU) is currently locked in a protracted strike with mobile service provider MTN, but the union says it’s gearing up to launch a strike across the country’s ICT sector.

The CWU says strike will focus on Telkom, Vodacom and the Post Office and is being held over issues regarding retrenchments and the lack in salary increases.

“We are preparing for a massive strike in the ICT sector where all our members and other sectors like the Post Office, Telkom and Vodacom, will be organised. Retrenchments and salary increases are the issues,” said CWU president Clyde Mervin.

The union is currently deciding if it will embark on a secondary strike, depending on the outcome of its talks with MTN.

Deputy general secretary of the CWU, Thabo Mogalane, told The Citizen that the union will only call a halt to strike action “once we have reached an agreement.”
