Facebook’s Internet.org finally lands in SA

We’ve watched as Facebook has partnered with various international mobile service providers to make its free Internet.org service available in other developing countries, but finally South African users will soon have access to the platform.

The social network has partnered with local provider Cell C on the project, which officially launches on July 1st.

“We were the first and only mobile player in SA to offer zero-rated access to WhatsApp and now we are building on that with this Facebook offering,” said Jose Dos Santos, CEO of Cell C.

Internet.org South Africa allows Cell C customers to post and view and status updates, comments, see their News Feed, timeline and profiles of other users and use Facebook Messenger. Standard rates will apply for all other Facebook-related activities such as posting and viewing videos and voice calling on Messenger.

As with all other countries where Internet.org is available, there’s also a host of helpful and educational content on the following portals specific to the South African market:

  • Information: Bing, Cell C, WikiHow, Wikipedia
  • Education: BeSmart, LoveWords, FunDza, Scholars4Dev, Wattpad, WorldReader, D-Siders
  • Women: Intel She Will Connect, Girl Effect, iLearn
  • Health: Health24, BabyCentre and MAMA, HIV360, Unicef Facts for Life
  • Marketplaces: Gumtree, OLX
  • News: BBC News, News24, SuperSport
  • Finance and jobs: Careers24, DAI, SmartBusiness, Money Matters

Internet.org is free for all Cell C contract customers, while those on prepaid must keep their line active by recharging at least once every 30 days to keep accessing the service.
