Eishkom loadshedding app wins R50k Microsoft competition

Lionel Chetty’s Eishkom loadshedding app has been announced as a winner in the Windows Phone category of the Microsoft Openness competition for young developers, earning him a cool R50 000 digital marketing campaign prize.

The competition called on current and aspiring Azure backend developers for Windows Phone, iOS, Android, or BlackBerry to submit entries for existing or concept phase apps.

Chetty, a student at the Durban University of Technology, began developing for Windows Phone last year. His app helps you keep track of the loadshedding schedule in your area for the different stages.

The app also has a push notification feature and a Twitter feed displaying all Eskom-related tweets.

“The frequency of power outages due to load shedding, inspired me to create an app that would simplify everything, by providing its users with notifications around loadshedding schedules in their area,” Chetty said.

“Winning this competition has helped to highlight my work in the local and international developer community,” he said.

Fellow Durbanite, Theoshan Moodley, won the same prize in the Android, iOS and BlackBerry category for his Android app, Family Alert.

Family Alert is a family safety app, which allows users to know where their family members are at any time of the day. In the event of an emergency, a distress alert can be sent at the touch of a button. The app also allows for frequent location updates while saving on battery life.

A computer engineering student at the University of KwaZulu–Natal, Moodley is also the founding partner of Live Wire Solutions, a software development company dealing in software solutions for desktop, web and mobile applications.
