Samsung will eventually re-enable Windows Updates

Last week, technology giant Samsung decided to roll out a software tool called ‘Disable_Windowsupdate.exe’, which blocked Samsung’s computers’ ability to download Microsoft’s Windows Updates.

Naturally that irked a lot of users, and after a lot of backward and forwards, the company decided to ultimately abandon the software tool and go back to the way things were.

“Samsung has a commitment to security and we continue to value our partnership with Microsoft,” Samsung said in a statement.

It detailed that it will release a fix through the same way it was introduced in the next couple of days.

“We will be issuing a patch through the Samsung Software Update notification process to revert back to the recommended automatic Windows Update settings within a few days. Samsung remains committed to providing a trustworthy user experience and we encourage customers with product questions or concerns to contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG.”

The exact reason as to why Samsung decided to roll out the software toll in the first place is still unclear.

According to Ars Technica, a company customer service representative told debugger and reverse engineer Patrick Barker (the man who discovered the software tool) that it did so because some Samsung laptops’ USB 3.0 ports “may not work” due to Windows Updates.
