Inaugural Africa Code Week to get 20 000 youths coding

In October this year, 20 000 young people from 11 African countries will have the opportunity to learn new coding skills that will empower them in education and business during the first ever Africa Code Week.

Africa Code Week is an initiative spearheaded by software firm SAP in partnership with Simplon.co, the Cape Town Science Centre and the Galway Education Centre that has been established in an effort to help bridge the digital divide on the continent and create a new breed of young entrepreneurs.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), it is estimated that Africa, less than one per cent of African children leave school with basic coding skills.

A pilot project has been launched and is currently under way today at the Cape Town Science Centre for kids aged eight to 11 and coincides with the WEF for Africa conference in the Mother City. Both events will run until Friday.

During the week-long Africa Code Week October event, 1 000 workshops will held for youths between the ages of eight and 24 in South Africa, Angola, Cameroon, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia where they’ll learn using the Scratch coding education platform .

Teachers, parents, educational institutions and youths can head over to the Africa Code Week website to sign up for updates as soon as registration is open for the event.
