MTN drops the Steppa 2’s price to R799

Remember the Steppa 2, the brilliant little Android smartphone from MTN that cost less than a grand? Well, MTN has recently announced that it’s dropped the phone’s price by R200, taking the Steppa 2 down to just R799.

“The reduced cost of the Steppa 2 will ensure that more consumers are able to afford what is already the most affordable high-performance smartphone in the market,” MTN’s chief marketing officer, Larry Annetts, said.  “This brings this critically-acclaimed smartphone within the reach of millions of consumers and introduces them into a rich world of data, which will go a long way towards bridging the digital divide.”

The phone’s specs have not changed; it’s still a 4-inch, Android 4.3 smartphone powered by a dual-core Qualcomm processor, with 4GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot.

But the critical takeaway is that it’s now even more affordable, and puts a further nail in the coffin of the feature phone and drags South Africa towards a smartphone-only future, and that can only be a good thing.
