Skype Glitch Crashes And Locks App

Just when one annoying software bug has been dealt with, another comes along. Really, developers must feel like they’re playing a game of whack-a-mole at this stage.

Last week Apple had to step into the breach to fix a bug on iMessage which allowed a simple string of text that meant anyone who sent it could essentially crash your iPhone. Now it looks like Skype will have to step up to the plate, as a similar problem seems to be affecting the communications app.

According to The Guardian, the Skype app can be crashed if it’s sent a certain text string; it causes the app to go into a crash loop that renders it useless on iOS, Android and Windows devices. The only way you’ll be able to use Skype on your device in the event of this happening is if you delete and then reinstall it.

Worse still, unlike the iMessage bug, which was a very specific text string, the six characters that are causing Skype to crash are “http://:” – that’s it!  This means that they could be easily sent by someone you know by accident.

The good news is that Mac OS and Windows 8.1 devices don’t seem to be affected by the bug. However, if the above text is sent to a Skype app from a device that is vulnerable it will crash app on both the recipient’s and the sender’s devices.

Skype is apparently aware of this problem and currently working on a fix. In the meantime, Skype users have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration.
