The latest weird fad from Japan is a cardboard personal movie theatre

Oh, Japan, will you ever run out of weird stuff to gift the world? After checking on the latest fad to capture your collective imagination, I’d guess “no”.

The latest somewhat unusual trend to come from the land of the rising sun is the “cardboard theatre”, a cardboard box with some sort of mobile device strapped on top of a hole on one end and a space for your head on the other.

You basically lie on your back and shimmy your head into the hole or slide the box onto your face, and then watch whatever you have queued up on your phone/tablet in the privacy and darkness afforded you by your makeshift enclosure.

It’s not exactly the virtual cinema I envisage headsets like the Oculus Rift and Valve’s Vive will make possible, but it’s a really good – and really cheap – alternative to investing in a virtual reality headset.

Mashable has a whole bunch of images showing off the phenomenon, including this Vine captured by user Ronald Chavez which basically shows you everything you need to know about it:
