Lowered etoll fees kick in from tomorrow

Etolls are about to become less of a financial burden. As of midnight tonight, the first part of the dispensation announced by government in May will kick in, lowering the fees for everyone and capping the monthly bills of registered vehicles.

From tomorrow, these are the new maximum amounts that accounts of registered vehicles will be capped at as reported on Fin24:

  • Motorbikes: R125
  • Light vehicles: R225
  • Small heavy vehicles: R875
  • Large heavy vehicles: R2 900

But that’s not all. Fin24 says national roads agency SANRAL is also expected to implement a new “free pass” system that gives all vehicles 30 free gantry passes which will go live “once the system and administrative requirements had been fulfilled”, and offer a 60 per cent discount on outstanding etoll debt dating back to December 2013 “once it was available” via Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters.

So the gantries are still there and clearly not going anywhere, but at least driving under them won’t cost as much as before. That’s something, right? Right?

Bueller? Bueller?
