SARS eFiling opens today: Tips and how to register

It’s July 1st, and all responsible citizens know what that means: the 2015 tax season has officially started.

Us South Africans are particularly fortunate in that our tax-collection agency, SARS, has been making it as easy as possible to file our taxes online via its popular eFiling service for years. The only catch is you must register on the service first, but doing so is a very easy 10-step process.

Here are the steps to follow in order to register as a new eFiler:

Step 1: Open your browser and navigate to www.sarsefiling.co.za.

Step 2: Click on the “Register” button.

Step 3: Choose “For Individuals”

Step 4: Read through and accept the eFiling terms and conditions. Make sure the “I Accept” box is checked, and click “Continue”.

Step 5: Here’s where you put in all of your personal information, and it should go without saying that you must make sure all of the provided information is correct.

You’ll need to provide your:

  • Personal details
  • ID number
  • Tax reference number
  • Marriage status and whether you’re in or out of community property
  • Preferred method of contact
  • Physical and/or postal address
  • Banking details

Step 6: Complete your registration by choosing an easy-to-remember login name and a secure password. SARS will add a 4-digit suffix to the login name you choose.

Click on the information button (the yellow dot with the black “i” in it) next to each option for a deeper explanation of what a login is, as well as SARS’ password requirements.

A good general rule is to create passwords that use a combination of special characters, non-consecutive numbers and words not easily guessable, but you’ll need to bend these around SARS’s specific password requirements.

Step 7: Right at the bottom of the form is where you will set up a password hint and security questions just in case you forget your password at some point… like this time next year. You must also successfully complete a captcha query/security pin, as you cannot proceed without it. This is just SARS’ way of making sure you’re a human, and not a bot.

Step 8: When you click “Register”, you’ll be assigned your final login name, which is the login you chose earlier suffixed with four digits.

Easy, right? Once you’re registered and have logged in, you’re all set to begin the process of filing your return electronically.

And if you’re looking for a few tips on doing your own taxes, SARS has a list of nine things you should keep in mind, like the fact that anyone who earns less than R350k a year doesn’t need to file a return at all.

Find that, and more tips on SARS’ helpful tips page.
