Rihanna named best-selling digital artist of all time

Rihanna has become the first artist to rack up over 100 million sales in digital singles.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Rihanna beat out the likes of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and… well… everyone else to become the top seller of digital singles of all time.

“Gold & Platinum is the industry’s premier way to celebrate achievement in the marketplace,” said Cary Sherman, Chairman & CEO, RIAA said in a statement.  “We’ve given awards to artists for nearly 60 years, but it’s rare that we have the opportunity to recognize a milestone like the one Rihanna has reached.

“Congratulations to Rihanna!  She has not only surpassed RIAA’s one-hundred million mark, but also is the first artist to do so.  It’s an historic feat and a testament to an extraordinary career.”

Rihanna has released seven albums since she kicked off her career in music in 2005, and the last six of them have gone certified platinum. She also boasts an impressive 7.5 million album sales in the US alone.

Over the course of her career, Rihanna has won eight Grammy Awards, two BRIT Awards, eight American Music Awards and 23 Billboard Music Awards.

And all of this accomplished at the ripe old age of 27, no less. What were you doing at 27? If the RIAA’s announcement is anything to go by, your activities probably included buying digital copies of Rude Boy and Umbrella.
