GEM Project finds you a cause to give 67mins to on Mandela Day

Although Nelson Mandela Day is marked on July 18th, the campaign’s tagline “Make everyday a Mandela Day” reminds us that giving back isn’t just a once-off thing. This year, Brand South Africa and the GEM Project volunteer work mobile program have teamed up to encourage South Africans to do just that.

The two organisations have announced a partnership that will help citizens locate a place to volunteer their time and resources to using the GEM Project app or USSD service.

The announcement was made at the launch of the Play Your Part for Madiba campaign yesterday which is geared towards building pride, patriotism, and a spirit of active citizenship in the country.

“The app is a social development drive that aims to mobilise communities within themselves so that they can help each other rise,” said GEM Project co-founder, David Shields. “Volunteers are encouraged to donate their GEMs back to the needy causes during Mandela Month. In order to ensure continuity and mobilise support even beyond Mandela Month, corporates are also encouraged to donate GEMs so that they can be allocated towards causes on an ongoing basis.”

Shields told htxt.africa that the project will be live in about a week’s time. Once a user downloads the app or uses USSD, their location will be geo-tagged and a list of nearby volunteer opportunities will pop up on their screen. These range from those who provide sheltering to foster car to clothing, assistance with homework for school kids to job shadowing and skills development for youth and more.

You can then select the one you would to get involved in and get further information on it.

Just like on the GEM Project platform, volunteers are rewarded for their efforts with a GEM that can be converted airtime, data, pre-paid electricity, or movie tickets, but you can donate them if you wish.

“Every day should be a Mandela Day. No action is too big or small. Active citizenship is an ongoing activity and we need to continue to embrace Madiba’s legacy,” Lead SA’s Yunus Mohammed said.
