Blizzard hints a new Hearthstone expansion is on the way

Hearthstone has probably had one of the most impressive growth runs in gaming.

It started as a side project at Blizzard, was released as a freemium game in 2013 and in just two years it’s become a cross-platform behemoth, boasting over 30 million players and an eSports league.

Its success has prompted Blizzard to churn out new content for it at a clip. So far, it’s been issued with an expansion pack, two solo player adventures (which offered unique rare cards as rewards) and a brand new mode, Tavern Brawl, which went live just last month.

Now, according to a press release sent to Polygon, it seems Hearthstone players will be receiving more new content this month.

The gaming website reports it was sent a scroll through the post from the Irvine developer telling players to mark July 22nd in their calendars. The full text on the scroll is as follows:

Well met, hero!

Champions are gathering from around the world to witness the next exciting thing Hearthstone has in store. News travels far and wide in search of brave new faces ready to answer the call to arms — are you one of them?

Muster for battle and mark July 22 on your calendar. The next bit of news won’t come by carrier pigeon — thankfully, we have much better ways of communication now.

Victory awaits!”

Right now, it’s unclear as to whether the announcement is trailing a new card expansion, a new mode, a new solo adventure pack or even new characters. However, the smart money is on new cards, since the last time Blizzard sent out a press release like this, it came ahead of the Goblins vs. Gnomes expansion. Then again, it could just be a tournament announcement. We’ll post more details as and when we receive them.

In the meantime, if you’re one of the 30m+ players who play Hearthstone, you might want to start competing for gold because it’s unlikely whatever new content Blizzard has in mind will be free. Happy grinding!
