CWU calls off eight-week long MTN strike

MTN customers may finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief. After two months of protest action, the Communications Workers Union (CWU) has announced it’s called the strike off after reaching an agreement with the mobile network.

The union announced at a media briefing this morning that MTN workers will now receive 12 per cent bonuses at the end of the year and casual (or temporary employees) will be made permanent.

Initially, the CWU had demanded a 16 per cent bonus and a 10 per cent salary increase.

The issue over salary increases however remains hanging and will be sorted out within a month’s time, a report on IOL said. Workers are in the meantime expected to be back at work within two days of penning the agreement.

“The agreement serves the common interests of MTN and the employees, and allows MTN to focus on its core reason for existence, which is to deliver services to its customers,” said newly appointed MTN CEO Mteto Nyati.

Ntayi also apologised for the inconvenience that MTN customers suffered during the period of the strike, and thanked them for their patience and loyalty.

The strike had intensified during its latter half with mobile contracts allegedly being switched off, violent clashes erupting and former CEO Ahmad Farroukh resigning to take on a position at a Saudi Arabian telecoms company.
