LG’s G4 offers smartphone photography that will have the pros impressed

While the LG G4 has garnered extremely positive feedback in the mass media for its innovative design, eye-catching use of genuine leather and ‘hammered metal’ materials in its finish and inclusion of top end technologies, it’s the smartphone’s new camera that has many journalists (and users’) talking.

Straight out of the gate, the G4 camera features some impressive specifications: 16MP on the resolution front to ensure images are crisp and high in detail, an entire version revision on LG’s optical image stabilization (OIS) technology and laser assisted focus that’s not only quick, but super accurate too.

It’s only when you delve a little deeper into the technical detail however that the real gems reveal themselves. The LG G4 is the first smartphone camera to make use of an f/1.8 lens in a world where the vast majority of competitors are sporting lenses with f/1.9 and f/2.2.

Why is this important? Well the f refers to an f-stop rating and is indicative of a lens’s aperture (the hold that lets the light through onto the sensor) size.

The larger the aperture, the more light it lets in. And the more light it lets in, the brighter the shots (particularly useful for low light) and the shallower the depth of field you’re able to get in photos (perfect for more arty, close-up pictures).

How does it stack up? In a word, pretty well. The sensor in the G4 is 80% brighter than the sensor the G3 shipped with. Throw the fact that the G4’s optical sensor is 40% larger than the one the G3 shipped with (not in megapixels, but in physical millimetres) and the amount of light making it onto the sensor (and the level of detail the G4 is as such able to capture) climbs even further.

Those two features pave the way perfectly for the proverbial coup de grace the fact that the G4 is LG’s first camera to incorporate manual features for more technical photographers.

Yes, we’re talking about the ability to manually adjust and control focus, shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation and white balance for every shot. The results are quite astounding. And with the ability to capture these pictures in RAW, as well as JPEG, there’s even endless editing ability on offer.

But don’t take LG’s word for it. Take a look at what we thought of it here.
