SA learner takes bronze at International Maths Olympiad

The 56th International Maths Olympiad has just wrapped up in Thailand and South Africa’s team have earned itself some serious boffin bragging rights.

Nicholas Kroon, Andrew McGregor, Mohammed Yaseen Mowzer, Sanjiv Ranchod, Bronson Rudner and David Broodryk finished the event with an improved score over last year and Mowzer secured a bronze medal.

The Western Cape learners were chosen to go to the competition after scoring top marks at the national South African leg in 2014.

The team was lead by 2014 leaders Melissa Kistner and Dirk Basson (who don’t officially participate) and ranked 55th overall out of 104 schools taking part, climbing up nine places from last year’s 64th place. Mowzer was awarded a bronze medal for his 68.4 per cent score.

Mowzer, Ranchod and Rudner were also part of last year’s national team.

This year’s Olympiad was truly historic; not only did South Africa perform well and move up the ranks for the first time in four years, but the US took the first spot for the first time since 1994.

Algeria is the second highest scoring African country at 62nd, while Tanzania took the very last spot at 104th.
