Show your Light Side allegiance with this R2-D2 bag

This year has seen a lot of challenges to heteronormative concepts that have long dominated western society. The latest is coming directly from ThinkGeek in the form of a handbag designed to appeal to Star Wars fans of all genders.

Gizmodo sums it up thusly: “…there’s finally no reason for anyone to feel embarrassed about carrying a handbag”.

And they’re right. This awesome simulated-leather “dome purse” features an R2-D2-inspired design, and it’s big enough to carry the bits and bobs a modern person is likely to have about their person.

Any modern person, of any gender, and that’s the beauty of the design. It’s also a brilliant way to show off your allegiance to the Light Side.

You’re limited to storing objects the size of a tablet and smaller – there’s no space for a laptop in this bag – but there’s more than enough space for wallets, keys, cell phones, chargers and cosmetic items, and even side pockets for keeping specific items exactly where you want them.

The bag sells for $59.99 (R750) on ThinkGeek.com, and if you’ve never been there before it’s a highly entertaining excursion as the site carries a lot of merchandise celebrating and spoofing the iconic movies, videogames and TV shows that geek culture has embraced.

A “Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock” t-shirt from The Big Bang Theory has to be my favourite, but there are other excellent things to spend your hard-earned cash on, like Portal bookends, and an Avengers: Age of Ultron backpack sporting Captain America’s shield.
