Hearthstone is getting a new expansion

If you’re one of the 30 million players that Hearthstone boasts as an audience, then rejoice; your favourite virtual trading card battle game is about to get a brand new expansion.

Blizzard has announced The Grand Tourney expansion will be arriving in August of this year and will be adding 132 new playing cards to the game. That brings the total of Hearthstone’s cards to almost 700.

The new expansion was hinted at earlier this month, in a press release Blizzard sent to gaming website Polygon.

Alongside the new spells and creatures featured in the expansion, players will also gain a new battle mechanic: ‘Inspire’. Cards marked with the ‘Inspire’ ability will have special powers that activate whenever the player uses their ‘Hero’ ability. The expansion also comes with a new playing board, which is themed around the snow-capped regions in the north of Azeroth.

According to The Verge, players can pre-purchase a bundle of 50 packs of the new cards next week for around $50. As with every game released by Blizzard, we expect the new expansion to be meticulously balanced and honed to an edge capable of cutting through diamonds.

We have to take our hats off to Blizzard as it’s been adding content to Hearthstone at a pretty regular pace. This year alone saw the addition of the Black Rock Mountain solo adventure, the new Tavern Brawl Mode and three new heroes for players to purchase. Now it’s adding the first new expansion since Goblins Vs. Gnomes popped up at the end of 2014. Start grinding for that gold, people, or August could get mighty expensive.
