What is SUHD anyway?

Picking out a TV used to be about size. How big could you go? Could it fit into your wall unit or would you need to buy a separate stand?

Today, consumers are bewildered by TV tech jargon.

TVs are now Smart TVs that connect to the internet. You can also pick between plasma and LED. And then there are the all-important buzzwords like OLED, LCD, UHD, HDR and 4K to think about.

Could it get more confusing? Yes! Your TV can even be curved.

SUHD, which stands for Super (and sometimes Prime) Ultra High Definition, is the latest type of display that has got everyone talking TVs again.

[su_pullquote align=”right”] Fact: at 10 nm in diameter, nearly 3 million quantum dots could be lined up end to end and fit within the width of a human thumb. [/su_pullquote]

LG, in particular, has launched a handful of super-slim and curved SUHD models that are top-of-the-line and perfect for home entertainment aficionados.

(Wondering which models to look at? We suggest the UF950T, UG870T and UF850T.)

Super design, better picture

You probably already know that a ULTRA HD resolution is four times that of Full HD. We’re talking cinema-quality television…

What makes SUHD special? Colour, contrast and brightness. Underneath the screen you’ll find quantum dots and LEDs coated with phosphors.

Going back to basics, quantum dots are tiny particles – 10nm in size and composed of a hundred to a thousand atoms – that glow when you shine light on them. The colour that a quantum dot emits is directly tied to its size, and is extremely stable; therefore using quantum dots results in a bigger range of colours that are more accurate and brighter than existing LCD TVs. [/symple_box]

While most UHD and SUHD TVs incorporate one type of LED technology, LG’s SUHD TVs use both.

As the Korean electronics giant puts it, quantum-dot tech works by “harnessing nano crystals that range in size from 2 to 10 nanometres.”

Either way the result is brilliant – you end up with a higher dynamic range (brighter brights and darker darks), billions of colours, and brighter overall images with incredible colour accuracy.

This is what takes LG’s new range of SUHD TVs to the next level when it comes to picture quality. It’s a new a new frontier in home entertainment.

SUHD TV just look better, especially if the content meets 4K UHD standards.
