UKZN students’ farming app wins national ICT innovators challenge

A team of 22 students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has won the top prize at the first ever MTN Foundation ICT Challenge.

Team UKZN created a farming app called Agri-Hub that gives farmers basic information and advice on the field as well as how to match the farming and harvest season with certain crops and it acts as a market place and communication tool between farmers and customers.

The MTN Challenge was part of the Enactus National Competition for entrepreneurs and as per the competition’s requirement for entrants to locate a beneficiary for their solution, Agri-Hub will help the uMtatewamaBovu Agricultural Cooperative with a consistent flow of income for all its employees.

“Our app enables customers to plan in advance and eliminates the travel between the farmers and potential customers, allowing farmers to be just a click away, ” the team explained.

Team UKZN competed against all other major universities from around the country in Johannesburg last week. The University of Zululand took second place, while the University of Pretoria and University of Venda took third and fourth place, respectively.

The students will go on to represent South Africa at the Enactus world cup in October at the Sandton Convention Centre.

“We first partnered with Enactus in 2014 as they share the same vision with us of creating an enabling environment that will allow entrepreneurs to thrive and help in the alleviation of poverty,” said Kusile Mtunzi-Hairwadzi, general manager of the MTN Foundation. “Human progress depends on our ability to waken up the entrepreneurial spirit that lives within each one of us and I’m pleased that our ICT challenge was able to do exactly that in the Enactus National Competition 2015.”
