MTN may end up cutting jobs over CWU strike

Eight weeks of intense, and sometimes violent striking by Communication Workers Union members and MTN employees may soon come to a head as the mobile network is reportedly considering cutting hundreds of jobs.

According to Reuters, unnamed sources said the strike has made MTN realise it “can do without some of its workforce”.

The striking employees initially downed tools due to grievances including salaries, benefits and overtime pay.

MTN is yet to give official comment as it’s “in a closed period”, a spokesperson reportedly said.

On Monday, MTN announced former Microsoft CEO Mteto Nyati as the company’s new boss after his predecessor Ahmad Farroukh resigned and went on to head Saudi Arabian telecommunications operator, Etihad Etisalat.
