Geforce drivers expose new NVIDIA GPU

A questionable entry, labeled “N16E-GXX”, in the latest Geforce driver update was spotted this weekend and that was all it took to get enthusiasts excited about a new GPU. However, because of the plethora of AMD rumours I read before their new cards earlier this year, I remained skeptical.

Then, Chinese laptop manufacturer Hasee had their CEO, Wu Haijun leak news that NVIDIA will be revealing their latest GPU for laptops before December this year and my interest was more than peaked.

According to the report, Wu Haijun went on to boast that, what he called the GTX 990M (not the official name and may differ once announced) will perform on par with the current GTX 980M in SLI. This fact should knock the wind right out of you and widen your eyes. If it doesn’t, check out our review of the MSI GT80 Titan which features the GTX 980M in SLI.

There is, of course, a downside. According to the report Wu Haijun went on to say that the GPU would have a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of between 100 – 180W which is immense for a mobile GPU. The report does state that to offset this mass power draw the GPU will be soldered onto the motherboard to be able to constantly binge on the power it needs.

All that said this GPU is going to require a monster cooling solution and, whether the card is soldered onto the board or not the GPU is going to need to draw a lot of power.

It should be noted that this information, including the name of the GPU is borne from leaks and rumours. However, some substance is given to all of this with the drivers pointing to the release of something new. Hopefully it won’t be long before NVIDIA comes out to tell us exactly what they’re cooking up at their HQ in Santa Clara.
