WD My Passport for Mac reviewed – Supercharged storage

If you’re an Apple fan, you’ll be very aware that the products it produces focus as much on being aesthetically pleasing to the eye as they do on being incredibly user friendly.

With that in mind, if you’re a MacBook user – of any variant, really – and you’ve recently found yourself running out of space on your local drive, Western Digital has you covered. WD’s latest My Passport for Mac is a sleek portable external drive that’s optmised for Macs right out of the box.

As weird as it may sound to start off a review praising a piece of kit for how lovely it looks, WD’s drive deserves a few nods in this department. At around 3.2 inches wide, about 3.4 inches tall and 4.2 inches deep, My Passport is a compact and easily portable drive. It’s about the size of a wallet and it can fit easily into the back pocket of a pair of jeans.

Visually, it works well with Apple’s design aesthetic; it feels snug and solid in your hand and its smooth, silver and black colour motif compliments iMacs and MacBooks perfectly. In terms of its presentation, My Passport For Mac has been created to look like its a natural extension of your Apple kit, rather than some clunky external appendage.

So it certainly looks the part, but how well does it perform?

The drive comes packaged with a USB 3.0 cable, which provides it with a power source so you don’t need to plug in anything extra externally. You can use a 2.0 cable to connect it to your laptop or desktop, but we found that if you did this, that transfer speeds between the devices dipped significantly.

In terms of storage size, My Passport For Mac comes in three variants, offering 1TB, 2TB and 3TB of space. (We received a 1TB drive to review, incidentally). The units are priced at R1 090 for the 1TB model, R1 600 for the 2TB model and R2 700 for the 3TB model. The price range may prove a sticking point with some prospective punters, since you can format any drive for a MacBook. That having been said, you’re not just paying for a piece of kit that gels with the visual aesthetic of your Mac; My Passport has a little more going on under the hood.

My Passport for Mac comes pre-formatted with the native Mac OS file system, HSF+ and it’s also compatible with Apple Time Machine. The drive also comes armed with a WD Security app to help encrypt your data from any possible intrusions; users can set a password to activate 256-bit encryption and since it’s hardware-based, it won’t adversely affect the speed of any data transfers. The device has a three-year warranty – which pips the usual one to two year warranty offered on most devices of this type.

Look, My Passport for Mac can come across as little pricey, but if you’re looking for a drive that matches the visual beauty of your Apple devices and that is unfiddly and easy to use, you could do worse than pick one up .
