Amazon Web Services opens an office in Joburg

While Amazon is selling everything from A to Z (and making billions of dollars doing it), they also created Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AWS is an offshoot of Amazon and a cloud computing platform that offers Amazon customers the ability to take advantage of their various web services. In South Africa, it’s is being used or development and test environments, data analytics, enterprise business applications, public sector and mobile, web and social applications.

AWS has been in the country for almost ten years now helping out MTN, Standard Bank and Travelstart with their cloud platform.

Now its opened a permanent office in Johannesburg. The new “Amazon Web Services South Africa Pty Ltd” office will join Amazon Development Centre Cape Town, which has been operating since 2004, creating tech for several Amazon companies, including AWS.

While this is already good news for the country (outside investment and all that global socio-economic jazz), it may be even better news for you if you’re looking for a jo.

AWS is also looking for 250 new hires over the next 12 months which will include: “Software Development Engineers; Network Development Engineers; Support Engineers; Technical Account Managers; Systems Engineers; Solutions Architects and more”.

The positions are for both the AWS office in Joburg and the existing Amazon one in Cape Town.

All we can really ask for now is an official local version of Amazon. While Raru does have an import section (and there are various ways to get imported goodies into the country) the prices are still higher than they should be. And when Amazon starts delivering by drone we definitely want to try it out.

Let’s hope drone hijacking doesn’t become a thing.
