Randburg’s Blairgowrie added to FTTH list

For the lucky few that have a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connection, they are currently enjoying some of the fastest residential broadband speeds available – and Randburg’s suburb of Blairgowrie is joining every-increasing list.

Telecommunications company Vumatel revealed that the suburb has qualified and will be added to its network after more than 27% of the residents showed interest in being connected.

Of the latest suburbs that could potentially be connected to Vumatel’s network, Blairgowrie was the first out of five suburbs to qualify. The other suburbs are Melrose and Birdhaven (of which 83 more residents need to show interest), Hurlingham and Hurlingham Manor (180 residents), Linden (370 residents), and Victory Park (121 residents).

In February, the suburbs of Killarney and Riviera were added the network, and in May the company added Saxonwold and Parkwood.

FTTH has increasingly become popular in Johannesburg, as residents don’t have to rely on Telkom and the speeds are much faster than conventional broadband connections like ADSL.

If you want your suburb to get FTTH from Vumatel, you can go to its website and register your interest. If more than 27% of the residents sign up or show interest, the company will come and install all the necessary equipment.

“Vuma installs its network in suburbs that show enough interest. You do this by pledging your support online. You can increase your suburb’s chances of getting fibre-to-the-home by getting involved. Tell your neighbours about the initiative and get them to show their interest too,” it explained.
