Twitter drops 140-character limit in DMs

If you’ve ever been stymied by the finite length of Direct Messages on Twitter, then rejoice! Twitter has announced on its official blog that all character limits in DMs have been officially removed.

The move comes after Twitter gave users a bit of leeway iin June, to type longer Direct Messages by extending the character limit to 10 000.

If you’re hoping that Twitter will also be removing the character limits on tweets, sorry but that won’t be happening any time soon; “tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today, rich with commentary as well as photos, videos, links, Vines, gifs, and emoji,” Twitter said.

Unlimited characters for tweets may never be a reality considering the fact that Twitter is built on the ability of its users to express yourself in just 140 characters. It even highlighted this as the main feature that set it apart from Facebook when it first launched.

“We’ve made a number of changes to Direct Messages over the last few months. Today’s change is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun,” the company said.

The new feature is already available for Android and iOS apps as well as the web.
