KFC’s silent bone conduction muzak wins major award in Durban

Last week saw the start of Creative Week in Durban which culminated in The Loerie awards held this weekend at the Durban International Convention Centre. Among the many winners across a wide range of categories were a number of notable firsts for the prestigious awards event.

First up was The Loeries’ Creative Future Scholarship, which was awarded to two KwaZulu-Natal learners for the first time. Yolisa Motha and Nomfundo Mcoyi were announced to be the recipients of  the scholarship worth approximately R1 million, and an additional three year bursary to attend Design School South Africa was awarded to Melissa Paterson.

Two new categories were announced for next year’s event during the proceedings held on Saturday and Sunday. The Service Design category was introduced to reward brands that engage with and service customers ethically and effectively using best practices, and the Music Video category was introduced to recognise the growing list of artists creating truly incredible, high quality music videos in Africa and the Middle East.

The sole Grand Prix award for South Africa was handed out to KFC and Oglivy & Mather for the KFC Soundbite campaign launched at the beginning of August, which gave KFC customers in some branches the opportunity to listen to music using bone conduction at specially-designed tables.

The only other Grand Prix was awarded to Loto Libanais and IMPACT BBDO Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for the campaign “Black Cats on Holiday”, which you can watch below.

Other standout campaigns that earned themselves a nod at The Loeries were Takealot’s Spit Braai video featuring SuzelleDIY and Comedy Central’s Own a piece of South Park campaign.

Social awareness campaigns were also acknowledges, including Hellocomputer’s Social Feed which lets people use their presence on social media to feed the hungry through the Peninsula School Feeding Association.

A total of 299 awards were given out at the gala event, with 2 944 entries submitted for consideration.
