Festival of innovation returns to Joburg: will highlight women in tech and art

Innovation ZA 2014 was a cracker of an event, so much to see, so much to do and so much to hack.

This year British Council Connect ZA in partnership with Fak’ugezi African Digital Innovation Festival is bringing the tech and art focused month back.

From tomorrow the 20th of August through to the 12th of September, Innovation ZA will once again take to the streets of Braamfontein, Johannesburg in a month dedicated to arts, technology and how the two combine.

During the four curated weeks of Innovation ZA 2015 attendees will be treated to a showcase of the prominent women in tech and the digital art spaces. Digital expert and creative artists are invited to Innovation ZA to collaborate and work together to come up with creative solutions to problems faced by everyone on a daily basis.

Levinia Jones, Head of Arts South Africa at British Council Connect ZA spoke about the importance of providing a platform for the female attendees at Innovation ZA.

“In the male dominated world of art, technology and making,  it is important to highlight the excellent contributions, successes and innovation woman are making both in SA and the UK,” she said. “We hope this may inspire young woman to imagine themselves in futures (or careers) they did not believe were available to them. We look forward to all presenters and audiences’ engagement with InnovationZA.”

Onedotzero’s cascade_za returns this year to pit teams of creative and tech minded people against each other for a week until an ultimate champion (for the year at least) is crowned.

Other highlights will include various discussions around BodyTech, Market Hack (which is brought to us this year by Watermans and Fak’ugesi) and various exhibits and screenings at the Ithuba Arts Gallery.

Most of the discussions over the month are free  but you may need to register for the event you want to attend. It promises to be a spectacular month for arts and technology and we can’t wait to see what it produces.
