AlwaysOn free WiFi comes to Uber cabs

Uber users in Johannesburg and Cape Town will now have access to free WiFi thanks the cab-hailing company and internet provider, Always On.

AlwaysOn and Uber are running a test promotion using the promo code “Alwayson” to give users who request an UberBLACK cab in either cities, free WiFi during their ride, and first-time users can also get R150 off their first ride by requesting a cab using the code.

During the test phase, AlwaysOn WiFi access will be provided free of charge for up to 15 minutes per trip. However, AlwaysOn managing director Hayden Lamberti said this can always be changed, as the company keeps its eyes on how the service is being used, and gets feedback from users. For the moment there is no data cap.

The WiFi will be accessible via mobile routers that will be placed in each cab.

The free WiFi promo is set to end at the end of September and thereafter, AlwaysOn and Uber will determine whether or not to bring it back for an extended period.

Uber has also just announced it’s bringing the exciting McLaren thrill ride promo, which was first hosted in Cape Town two weeks ago, to Johannesburg users tomorrow.

You could be driven to your destination in a McLaren 650S for free if you request a ride using the code “UberMcLarenSA” between 9am and 5pm.

The promo is on a “fastest-fingers-first” basis for one person only and is valid for a trip up to a maximum distance of 5km.
