Ashley Madison discussed hacking rival site

Another day, another Ashley Madison story. This one, however, seems to cast the business practices of the dating website in an even darker than light than before. If you’ve been following the controversy surrounding the site’s data breach and the resultant fallout, you’ll know that’s really saying something.

According to some of the company’s internal emails that were leaked last week, Ashley Madison’ Chief Technology Officer (CTO) discussed hacking one, Nerve.com, a site dedicated to sexual topics, culture and relationships.

The Guardian reports that an email exchange between the site’s CTO, Raja Bhatia, and its CEO,Noel Biderman, revealed that the former had identified a hole in Nerve.com’s security while having a look at the site’s new dating section.

“Was searching the casual dating service as it’s been on my mind,” Bhatia told Biderman.” I remembered Nerve relaunched with a slick site and did a little digging into how it worked.”

“They did a very lousy job building their platform. I got their entire user base,” he wrote. “Also, I can turn any non-paying user into a paying user, vice versa, compose messages between users, check unread stats, etc.”.

Six months after the initial exchange, Bhatia asked Biderman whether or not he should tell Nerve.com about their security hole. Apparently he never received a reply.

Avid Life Media has since issued a statement saying, that the emails have been taken out of context.

“Nerve was exploring strategic partnerships in May of 2012 and reached out to Noel to determine Avid Life Media’s interest in the property. At the time Noel did not act on that opportunity,” ALM said in a statement to VICE.
