Print your own head and work with leather for free this Friday at the Maker Library Network

We’re still coming down from the high of Maker Faire Cape Town 2015 last weekend, and this weekend is shaping up to be just as great.

Friend of the site and founder of The MakerSpace Durban, Steve Gray, will be hosting  two workshops to coincide with the Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival.

We were lucky enough to go to the last event where these two workshops were held: at Jozihub where Gray talked about getting more South Africans making.

If you’d like to get your head 3D printed, Gray and his team will scan your bust using an Occipital Structure Sensor – a 3D scanner that connects to an iPad. With the finished scan touched up, all that needs to happen is for the file to be exported to the printer and to wait for the plastic to dry.

While that happens there is also a leatherworking workshop. Here you can cut, fold, glue, sew and oil your own leathers into a wallet, cellphone case  or any new patterns they bring along.

We’ve had our noggins scanned before, and our own wallet sitting in our other pair of pants, so we can attest to the fun to be had at these workshops.

Gray has always been extremely inclusive and tried to get as many people making as possible, and that is why the surcharge to participate in the workshops has only ever existed to cover the cost of material. But you can get in for free this time, as Connect_ZA will be sponsoring the event.

All you need to do is reserve yourself a place:

The workshops will be taking place this Friday; 28 August at the Ithuba Arts Gallery – 100 Juta Street, Biccard Street entrance.
