Microsoft’s HoloLens was met with a lot of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ when it was unveiled in January this year, and the first question gamers had was when the technology will be made available commercially.
We knew at the time that augmented reality technology of that magnitude doesn’t just get rolled out overnight, but still we were hopeful.
It turns out that a consumer model of HoloLens won’t be made available to the public for another number of years – two years at least – as it will only be pushed out to developers within the next year.
During an interview with the BBC, CEO Satya Nadella said that the first developer version, called the V1, will come out “within the next year”, and that it is focused “more around developers and enterprises”.
That doesn’t bode well for eager gamers who can’t wait to get their hands on a set, so that they can play Minecraft – just like it was demonstrated during this year’s E3 conference.
Nadella even said earlier this year that HoloLen’s focus will be more on developers anyway.
“I want us to push a lot more of the enterprise usage … In general Microsoft’s approach will be always this dual-use focus, or this multi-focus. What we can uniquely do is bridge consumer to enterprise. That’s in our DNA,” he told ZDNet.
Reiterating that point during the BBC interview, he said that developers at this point will be the main focus.
“We will have developer versions of it first and then it will be more commercial use cases and it will evolve.”
