Deus Ex: Pre-Order Divided

Another pre-order announcement has been met with divided opinion in the gamer community. This time the topic sparking the furore is the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided pre-order incentives. While some are excited for the game, others, like Youtuber John “Total Biscuit” Bain, are once again taking a bat to the topic of pre-ordering and why we shouldn’t encourage it.

At the centre of the debate is the Augment Your Pre-order incentive created by Square Enix. The incentive unlocks in-game DLC for Deux Ex: Mankind Divided after a certain amount of pre-orders are sold. The more pre-orders sold, the more DLC is unlocked. The DLC that can be unlocked is the Covert Agent Pack, an extra in-game mission, a digital OST sampler, a digital comic book and a digital novella.

As the tiers and DLC are unlocked players who pre-order the game will be able to select up to four pieces of DLC that they wish to have included in their game. At time of writing only Tier 1 which offers up the Covert Agent Packs has been unlocked.

The final tier that can be unlocked, and will be available to all those that pre-order Mankind Divided, is the privilege of playing the game four days before its official release.

The topic of pre-ordering is a contentious issue among gamers. Some say you should do it to show your support for the publisher and developer while others blame pre-ordering for the trend of broken games being released on day one. The overlooked fact is that pre-ordering a game is a matter of personal preference.

If you want to get a game on day one, or in this case day -4, then you’re going to pre-order the game no matter what people say and that is fine. Inversely holding out until after release to buy a game is fine as well.

The subject boils down to what you are willing to spend your money on and if that is pre-ordering games that YOU think you will enjoy then so be it. It must be said though that there is a risk attached to buying games before you can read reviews about the game. Of course caution should always be excercised but getting behind a series of games that is already established and proven to be good should be met with less trepidation.

If you are looking to pre-order Deus Ex: Mankind Divided but want to unlock all the content Square Enix does have a Collectors Edition which includes all the content from the Augment Your Pre-order tiers, an artbook, a Limited Edition Steelbook and a 9 inch Adam Jensen figurine.

We think its a cool idea and bravo to Square Enix for trying something new.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has been given a release date of February 23rd 2016.
