Apple beware? Beautiful Huawei Watch gets official name and launch date

Chinese manufacturer Huawei made a bold and almost successful attempt to stea the show at Mobile World Congress with its very good looking smartwatch, but details about the smart timepiece between its announcement in March and now have been slim.

So hurrah, then, for the IFA trade show currently taking place in Germany, where Huawei has named and priced its flagship wearable and announced release dates too.

Going the naming route of Apple, it’s called the Huawei Watch – as simple as that. The company has a decent pedigree in fitness bands, but this is its first actual smartwatch – and we think it looks amazing.

Beyond the guff of “bridging the gap between fashion and technology”, the watch face is a fully circular 1.4-inch (42mm in diameter) touch-sensitive AMOLED display, which has been coated in a scratch-proof sapphire crystal coating. The frame is cold-forged stainless steel.

But Huawei hasn’t forgotten about the fitness angle either.

“The Huawei watch is a perfect exercise companion with a heart rate sensor to measures heart rate and the 6-axis motion sensor can track activities including walking, running, cycling and mountain climbing. It is also able to download music for offline playback via Bluetooth, which can also link up to wireless headphone,” it said in a media statement.

Huawei’s smartphones run on the Android operating system, but while the Watch operates on Android Wear, it is fully compatible with iOS and Android phones.

“Today, consumers are rarely content with just staying connected; they are looking for a premium smartwatch that is technologically innovative. When designing this watch, we were keen to combine the best in technology and innovation with premium materials and a classic look and feel. With the sapphire crystal and circular watch face, we feel that the Huawei watch has achieved this,” explained Benjamin Norton, Wearable Design Expert at the Huawei Consumer.

It will be available in black, sliver and rose gold.

South African availability and pricing will be announced at a later date, but the US will get it on 17th September for $350-800 (roughly R500-10 000).
