Domain sale hopes to spark more .joburg registrations

South Africa recently celebrated the fact that it now has over a million .co.za websites, but it seems the uptake for city-specific web addresses is a bit slow.

In the 10 months since the launch of the dotJoburg (“.joburg”), dotCapeTown (“.capetown”) and dotDurban (“.durban”) domain names, only 11 300 websites registered to use those domains.

But there’s no need to panic about the slow registration just yet, as Wayne Diamond, managing director of Domains.co.za, said that it took .co.za a good number of years to reach 450 registrations back in 1995. Granted, that was a time in which the internet was a luxury rather than the necessity it is today.

To boost the number of registrations, Domains.co.za revealed that registering dotJoburg, dotCape Town and dotDurban domain names will now be the same price as .co.za domains.

“We’re hopeful that reduced dotJoburg, dotCapeTown and dotDurban pricing will help take the number of registered SA city domain names right up and over the 20 000 milestone,” he said.

From this month all domains (.co.za and the city-specific ones) will only cost R75, and to sweeten the deal if you take a Web Hosting package or Website Builder package in Spetember, Domains.co.za will throw in a .joburg, .durban, .capetown, .co.za, .web.za, .org.za or net.za domain in for free.
