Google tweaks its logo for the sixth time in its history

Google, the company that many perceive to exist at the heart of the modern internet, has adjusted its corporate image in line with the changes currently going on at the company and in the wider world of tech.

To that end, one of the most recognisable logos on the planet has been tweaked for the sixth time in the company’s history, and our response to it here at the htxt.africa offices hasn’t been hugely positive.

I think it looks like a young child drew it as a grade 5 art project, Lungelo thinks it looks like it was done by an amateur, Charlie thinks it looks boring, Clinton calls it “needless”, and Brendyn says he’d now rather use Bing. Ouch.

Undeniably, the new logo is still recognisably Google, but the overall sentiment in the office is largely underwhelming.

The official Google Blog goes into some detail about why they did it, and clearly they disagree with our sentiments, but still, the change is not one we’re particularly enamoured with. It’ll likely grow on us over time, but then the same can be said of warts.

Anyway, our whingeing aside, here’s the gist of what The Goog’s people say about the change:

“As you’ll see, we’ve taken the Google logo and branding, which were originally built for a single desktop browser page, and updated them for a world of seamless computing across an endless number of devices and different kinds of inputs…”. They end off with “We think we’ve taken the best of Google (simple, uncluttered, colorful, friendly), and recast it not just for the Google of today, but for the Google of the future.”

The company plans to roll out the updated logo across its various products in the coming days and weeks, so expect to see a whole lot of changes to the Google services you use regularly.

What do you think about the logo? We’d love to hear your thoughts on it, so please hit us up on our Facebook page and comment on the story there.
