Worldreader wants to give 10 million Africans free ebooks

Global literacy non-profit organisation, Worldreader and Opera Software want to put a ton of ebooks into the hands of millions of Africans.

The two partnered five months ago to provide 25 000 free ebooks from Worldreader’s book publishing partners and authors on the Opera Mini mobile browser to millions of citizens in 34 countries in Africa, including South Africa. So far, over million readers have been reached and the pair want to reach 10 million by the end of this year.

According to stats provided by Worldreader, most of the ebook readers (23%) come from Ethiopia, 65% are male and 35% are female (although women read for approximately 11.5 minutes per session while men read for 6.5 minutes) and the most popular literary categories amongst new readers are Love, Sports, Education, and Health.

“We’ve placed the Worldreader icon in a coveted space on the Opera Mini speed-dial; right next to the Wikipedia button, because we believe access to reading, and access to knowledge go hand-in-hand,” Richard Monday, VP Africa, Opera Software said in a statement.

“Reading is a human right that one billion people can’t yet enjoy,” added David Risher, CEO and co-founder of Worldreader . “Worldreader and Opera are working together to make sure that books–and the power within them–are available to every single person on the planet to help them reach their full potential.”
