SA non-profits can now use Google products for free to help raise awareness

Internet tools can do a lot to help non-profit organisations do their work and spread awareness, but often times, there aren’t enough funds to pay for these services. To help give South African NPO’s a helping hand, Google has opened up access to Google for Non-profits in the country.

Google for Non-Profits gives registered NPOs free access to tools including Gmail, YouTube, AdWords, Google Calendar and more.

The company partnered with NPO tech enabler, TechSoup Global, to launch the initiative on our shores yesterday.

Any NPO registered with the Department of Social Development can apply to join the program on the Google for Non-profits website.

Once granted access, you’ll be able to use the following products in either English, isiZulu or Afrikaans:

  • Google Ad Grants: Free AdWords advertising (up to R130 000 per month) to promote your website on Google through keyword targeting.
  • Google Apps for Non-profits: Free version of the Google Apps business productivity suite, which includes Gmail, Docs, Forms, Calendar and more
  • YouTube for Non-profits: With premium branding capabilities on YouTube channels, and increased uploading capacity.

Google began preparing the ground for the program’s arrival in South Africa earlier this year with the Google Academy for NGOs series of workshops to train over 130 NPOs from Gauteng, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape on how to take advantage of the power of the internet

“We’re inspired and humbled by stories showing how nonprofits can make positive changes around the world using our tools,” said Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, Google South Africa manager of public policy and government relations. “As well as South Africa, the Google for Non-profits programme is also available in Kenya and Botswana”.
