Samsung’s Gear VR will set you back R3 500

There is no doubt that virtual reality (VR) is making a huge come-back after its sudden fall in the 90’s, with companies like Oculus VR taking the lead with its Oculus Rift goggles.

Samsung first announced its entry into the VR world in September last year when it unveiled its Gear VR headset, and South African consumers will be able to buy a pair today for R3 500.

Samsung announced in October last year that the headset would be coming to South Africa, but at the time it didn’t have a solid release date.

The headset is unlike Oculus’ offering, as you need to slot a Galaxy Note 4 into the front housing to view VR content. It is essentially a very expensive headstrap with lenses so that you can view content through your phone.

Oculus did however help Samsung design and develop its Gear VR.

The Innovator Edition is the one that will be made available in South Africa for R3 500, and has been optimised for use with the Galaxy S6 or Edge.

“Our latest innovation, the Gear VR Innovator Edition, is designed for what matters to our consumers, and reflects Samsung’s unique mobile technology that will shape the future of the wearable market,” said Craige Fleischer, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

A quick poll around the office that we are pretty much split down the middle on how successful virtual reality will be this time around.

Deon is super excited for anything that has VR written on it, while Charlie is approaching the subject with cautions optimism.

You can buy the headset on Takealot.com for R3 299 on in one of Samsung’s many stores country-wide.
