Watch out for this SANRAL scam

We’ve been alerted to a new phone-based scam that has someone impersonating a SANRAL representative, with the aim of stealing people’s banking details by enticing them with a R1 500 financial reward for “not claiming any funds”.

However, SANRAL has made it clear in a press statement there is no such campaign to reward anyone for anything, and the organisation has asked that people do not respond to such calls. Explicitly stated is that “SANRAL will not be held liable for any resulting losses”.

But apparently the scammers are quite convincing. SANRAL’s Fraud Hotline says the impostors start off by confirming the target’s personal details that include ID numbers, names and addresses, and they follow those up by asking for banking details so that they can transfer the “reward”.

Quite frankly. we’re surprised this scam has even hit SANRAL’s radar since the likelihood of anyone believing SANRAL has money is so slim. Then again, in these tough financial times it’s probably a case of the scammers hoping desperation will win out over common sense, which makes the scam all the more reprehensible.

Should this happen to you, simply hang up the phone. If the caller doesn’t hide their number, make a note of it and give it to SANRAL’s Fraud Hotline, which you can reach toll-free on 0800 204 558. If you’d prefer to communicate by email, send it is sanral@tip-offs.com.
