Hey Siri, why can I only stream Apple’s keynote on Windows 10 and Apple products?

Tonight Apple will be unveiling its latest product offerings to the world and quieten the rumour mill. Well, for a few days at least.

Among the products the rumour mill believes we’ll see is an actual Apple-branded television set, a new iPhone and maybe a car. Fans thinking about streaming the keynote from the Apple site on anything other than a Macbook, iMac, iPhone, iPad or Windows 10 PC are sadly, however, going to miss it all.

Heading over to the Apple event page in preparation for the keynote address this evening we discovered the following message:

Requirements: Live streaming uses Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. HLS requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Safari on iOS 7.0 or later, a Mac with Safari 6.0.5 or later on OS X v10.8.5 or later, or a PC with Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Streaming via Apple TV requires a second- or third-generation Apple TV with software 6.2 or later.

The reason for this is because Windows 10 is the first Microsoft operating system to support Apple’s HLS technology. HLS works by breaking a live stream up into smaller chunks, and the client you are watching through adapts the video quality according to your connection speed and the load on the server.

This isn’t the first time Apple has limited streaming options for its events. Last year it limited streaming of its Special Announcement in October to Safari browsers, though you could watch the live blog on the site from any machine or browser.

The live stream of the “Hey Siri” keynote will start at 19:00 here in South Africa, and as long as you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 or own an Apple product you can watch it live on the Apple events page.
