Raspberry Pi (finally) gets an official touchscreen

The world of Raspberry Pi has taken on a life of its own, and while a touchscreen for the famous maker board may not be news, an official one is now available and it adds a lot more than just an interactive display.

The screen is a 7 inch panel with a 800 x 480 pixel resolution, giving it a 133 ppi pixel density as well as 10 finger multi-point capabilities.

The screen is (officially) compatible with Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, Raspberry Pi Model 1 B+ and the Raspberry Pi Model 1 A+.

If you’re planning to pick one up, you’re looking at paying $60 or £48 (R880 or R1020) depending on which international site you visit. We had a look around the local vendors that specialise in Raspberry Pi and its ilk and they don’t have it yet. When they do, and we have a (hopefully cheaper) local price, we’ll definitely let you know.

If you purchase the screen you won’t find just the panel, but a kit consisting of an adapter board, four mounting pillars, a display ribbon cable, and four jumper wires.

The adapter board features the following:

  • 4 standoffs to connect the board to the screen.
  • DSI connector that connects to the DSI connector on the Raspberry Pi via a short ribbon cable.
  • Touch overlay connection.
  • USB port for power out.
  • Micro-USB power in that powers the screen and can also be used to power the Pi if it is connected to the power out USB.
  • Pinout connections.

Because the panel uses the DSI connection, the HDMI port is left open, so you cxan use two displays at the same time on the same Pi.

The back of the panel features mounting points in which you can attach the Raspberry Pi directly to it, basically creating a tablet.

Although this is an official product and for many people it will be the only version they will buy, don’t forget about the myriad touchscreens that have preceded it. Readwrite wrote a great little article about the various ones on offer, and they may soon be reduced in price now that this one exists.

Local retailers also have stock of these unofficial screens.
