This afternoon Qualcomm announced new details about their new Snapdragon processors..
Although rumours around the new Snapdragon 820 processor have circulated for a while, the details surrounding the chip have been shrouded in secrecy until today. This latest processor for premium smartphones is said to feature the new X12 LTE modem which is supposedly capable of reaching download speeds of 600Mbps and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps.
In addition to that the new processor is the first to feature Advanced Closed Loop Antenna Tuning. This technology dynamically tunes the radio frequency performance so that your signal is not hampered by things such as a full metal casing opening up design options for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners.
To further enhance call quality Qualcomm has included next generation Wifi calling which allows the X12 LTE modem to switch the call between the network and the Wifi network depending on which has stronger signal quality. This should, in theory assist users in areas that have poor signal.
A good middle ground.
The manufacturer has also introduced two new processors for the next generation of mid-range and sub R2 000 smartphones. The Snapdragon 430 will provide X6 LTE capabilities able to reach downloads speeds of 150Mbps and upload speeds of up to 75Mbps.
For mid range smartphones Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 617 processor which features X8 LTE technology capable of reaching download speeds of 300Mbps and upload speeds of up to 100Mbps.
This should mean faster mid-range smartphones with better camera technologies as both of these new low end chips can support camera sensors up to 21MP.
Qualcomm has also unveiled Quick Charge 3.0. If you own an HTC One M8, LG G4 or a Sony Xperia Z4 then you’ll have gotten used to the speed at which your phone charges with the existing Quick Charge 2.0 technology.
With Quick Charge 3.0, Qualcomm claims that the new technologies in its Snapdragon 820, 617 and 430 processors will take your smartphone from zero percent to 80% charge in just 35 minutes. This represents a 27% improvement on Quick Charge 2.0 and an improvement as high as 200% on Quick Charge 1.0.
The manufacturer claims this can be done without damaging the battery life cycle and at a lower cost to the OEM.
In the media statement to the press Alex Katouzian, senior vice president of product management at Qualcomm, had this to say. “As smartphones and tablets continue to spread to all corners of the globe, we recognize that users are becoming more discerning in what they want.”
He went on to say that, “The introduction of these new processors is a clear indication that we are listening to the needs of our customers who want ever improving cameras, faster connectivity, and better battery life across all available price points.”[Source – Qualcomm]
