A transformer has blown and is on fire at the Roosevelt Park substation

Right now, a transformer is on fire in Emmarentia, and the surrounding area is without power because the Roosevelt substation has been switched off so that the fire can be dealt with.

Fire trucks are on the scene attempting to control the blaze according to our own Adam Oxford who has just passed through the area. The official @CityofJoburg Twitter account indicates that City Power is aware of the issue and is responding:

Other affected suburbs include Northcliff, Fairlands, Berario, Blackheath & Montgomery Park. This isn’t the first time the Roosevelt substation has been involved in unexpected fireworks; it apparently “exploded” in April of this year, according to The Citizen. And here’s a tweet from Twitter user @MarilynJFraser with an image of the smoking substation.

Sorry, people in the area, looks like you’re in for a dark weekend.
